A practical guide to preparing a textile specification covering end use, construction, finish, testing, compliance, packaging and delivery.
1. Begin with the end use
A textile specification should first explain the intended application. The same fabric construction can perform differently depending on laundering frequency, institutional use, retail presentation, climate, finishing and expected service life.

2. Define the technical construction
For fabric, state composition, yarn count, weave, ends and picks, finished width, weight or thread count, and any required tolerance. For made-ups, include finished dimensions, sewing details, components and workmanship expectations.

3. Describe finish and appearance
Terms such as “soft,” “premium” or “hotel quality” are subjective. Support them with a reference sample, target test values or clear approval criteria. State bleaching, dyeing, printing, sanforizing, calendaring, easy-care or functional finishing requirements.
4. Set testing and acceptance criteria
Identify the tests that matter to the end use: dimensional stability, colorfastness, tensile or tear strength, pilling, absorbency, flame performance, water repellency or another buyer protocol. Define the test method and acceptable result where possible.
5. Confirm compliance scope
Do not list certifications only as brand names. Confirm which facility, process, product and transaction must be covered, whether a transaction certificate is required, and how current validity will be checked.
6. Add commercial and delivery information
Quantity, color breakdown, packaging, labeling, destination, Incoterm, approval sequence and target shipment date all affect price and lead time. A technically complete request without commercial context may still produce an unusable quotation.
7. Use a final buyer checklist

Share a physical sample or specification sheet where available and identify which element controls in case of conflict.
